The Scout and The Witness

An Independent Yin Inquiry

Before beginning, read through the entire practice once. Then step onto your mat. Find a quiet space. Set a timer. Move slowly. Allow the poses to become a doorway for observation rather than achievement.

The purpose of this practice is not to stretch deeper. The purpose is to cultivate the Witness.

This week the ancient story of the scouts serves as our backdrop. Before entering a new land, they were asked to observe carefully and return with a report.

Today, your body, breath, mind, and emotions become the landscape.

Your task is simply to observe.

1. Arriving

Child’s Pose

Time: 4–5 Minutes

Allow the body to settle toward the earth.

Nothing to fix.

Nothing to accomplish.

Simply arrive.

Inquiry

As you settle into the shape, notice the climate of your inner world.

What thoughts are present?

What emotions are present?

What concerns are asking for attention?

Without judgment, simply observe the reports being brought back by the inner scouts.

No need to change anything.

Just notice.

2. Meeting the Edge

Melting Heart Pose

Time: 3–5 Minutes

Walk the hands forward and allow the heart to soften toward the earth.

Remain steady.

Remain receptive.

Inquiry

As sensation increases, notice the mind’s response.

Does it resist?

Negotiate?

Judge?

Rush?

Avoid?

The purpose of inquiry is not to eliminate these reactions.

It is to see them clearly.

Can the Witness remain present while the mind does what minds do?

Observe.

Breathe.

Soften.

3. Exploring the Territory

Dragonfly Pose

Time: 5 Minutes

Extend the legs comfortably wide and slowly fold forward.

Support yourself as needed.

Allow gravity to do the work.

Inquiry

The scouts stood before a vast and unfamiliar landscape.

What feels vast or unfamiliar in your life right now?

What appears larger than you expected?

Where does the body tighten?

Where does fear arise?

Practice the art of equanimity.

Allow sensations to arise.

Allow sensations to pass.

Observe the changing landscape while remaining connected to the awareness that does not change.

4. Remembering the Center

Reclined Butterfly

Time: 4–5 Minutes

Rest on your back.

Bring the soles of the feet together.

Allow the knees fall out to the sides.

Open the hips…

Inquiry

Feel the rhythm of the breath.

Notice the body breathing itself.

Notice the heart beating without effort.

Notice the support beneath you.

The world may be changing.

Circumstances may be changing.

Yet awareness remains.

Can you sense the quiet center that is present beneath movement, beneath thought, beneath uncertainty?

Rest there.

5. Integration

Savasana

Time: 5 Minutes

Release all effort.

Let go of the practice.

Let go of the inquiry.

Let go even of the Witness.

Simply rest.

No destination.

No improvement.

No achievement.

Just being.

When the practice is complete, remain seated for a few moments before returning to your day.

Perhaps ask yourself:

What report would my inner scout bring back today?

And what remains present beneath every report?

If insights arise, I would love to hear what you discovered.

Warmly,

Michael
