The Hidden Chain: From Ignorance to Suffering

Many people say the Buddha taught that attachment causes suffering.

That is correct — but incomplete.

Attachment is not the root. It is the developed form of something subtler.

The root is ignorance — not ignorance as stupidity, but ignorance of impermanence (anicca). We do not directly experience that everything — including our own body and mind — is constantly arising and passing away.

Gate 1 – Confront

When we meditate — even for a short 15 minute “sit” — we confront impermanence. The body is not solid. It is sensation. Movement. Change.

But if impermanence is not directly experienced, something else happens.

Gate 2 – Explore

Contact occurs.
A sound. A thought. A memory. A physical impulse.

Contact produces sensation.

That sensation is immediately interpreted as pleasant or unpleasant — positive or negative.

This is the subtle split.

Gate 3 – Systemize

If pleasant, we lean toward it.
If unpleasant, we resist.

Sensation → Categorization → Reaction.

Repeated reactions deepen into craving and aversion. Craving and aversion develop into attachment. And attachment, in a world that never stops changing, produces suffering.

This becomes a rut — a groove in consciousness.

Gate 4 – Illuminate

But there is a gap.

Between sensation and reaction.

In Vipassana, the work is to scan the body and observe sensation directly — without reacting.

Instead of feeding the rut of reactivity, we inject equanimity.

This is restriction in the deepest sense — not suppression, but conscious non-reaction.

In that pause, we directly experience anicca.

The sensation changes. It dissolves. It passes.

Gate 5 – Manage the Outcome

When reaction weakens, craving weakens.
When craving weakens, attachment loosens.
When attachment loosens, suffering softens.

The chain is not broken philosophically.

It is weakened experientially.

This is not a belief system.

It is a structural map of how suffering forms — and how it can unwind.
